Counseling Awareness Month

Counseling Awareness Month occurs during April. It honors mental health counselors, school and college counselors, substance abuse counselors, and career counselors. Many Americans celebrate counseling as a profession and a life-changing mental health service during this month-long annual event. The awareness color for mental health is green. A second awareness color that represents Counseling Awareness Month is teal. Wear a green or teal enamel awareness ribbon pin, fabric ribbon, or silicone awareness wristband.

Celebrated on the second Friday of April, Teal Day encourages awareness of the importance of counseling and self-care for counselors as they enlighten their clients, colleagues and the greater public of the same. In addition to wearing a green pin for Counseling Awareness Month, wear a teal pin to represent Counseling Awareness Day.

The Importance of Seeking Counseling

Seeking counseling is a way to proactively manage problems. For example, a counselor can teach skills to handle difficult times. Further, some people seek counseling services to improve already great lives. Counseling has the potential to help people develop skills that assist them excel in specific areas such as sports, business, and leadership.

Counseling Awareness Month was established as an annual event by the American Counseling Association (ACA) in 2002. Both a time of advocacy for the profession and a celebration of the field’s accomplishments, Counseling Awareness Month is an excellent opportunity for professional counselors to reach out to the public and talk about the work they do. They can also discuss ways they benefit their communities. And, lastly, how they have helped society for the better.

How To Participate in Counseling Awareness Month

Get involved and celebrate National Counseling Month! Whether you are a practicing counseling professional or a student in the field, there are a number of ways that you can do your part to promote this important month in your community and online.

Consider some of the following ideas:

Spread the Word
What does the field of professional counseling mean to you? Talk about it! Initiate a conversation with a local media outlet, a friend, or a neighbor to help spread the word about Counseling Awareness Month. The ACA website features a variety of downloadable resources, from media tip sheets and story ideas to helpful fact sheets and newspaper columns. These can prepare counselors to talk about the profession of counseling, as well as current trends in the field.

Get Social
Get involved on social media:

Stay informed on ACA’s coverage by following and using the hashtag #CounselorsCare on social media.

Take a photo of yourself holding it, and post it to any social media account. Be sure to include the hashtag #CounselorsCare in your post!

Change your profile picture on any social media account to reflect Counseling Awareness Month.

From talking to your friends about the benefits of counseling services to showing support to the counselors in your life, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate Counseling Awareness Month. According to the American Counseling Association, there are a few ways you can celebrate Counseling Awareness Month in April this year, including the following:

  • Create mental health awareness posters to post around your workplace or school.
  • Thank a counselor or mental health provider in your life.
  • Get a free mental health screening.
