National Cancer Survivors Day
June 6, 2027
National Cancer Survivors Day
On the first Sunday in June each year, the nonprofit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation celebrates National Cancer Survivors Day. Since 1988, the yearly event has taken place. Furthermore, The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation advocates for the events as a “celebration of life.” Survivors, described as anyone who has a history of the disease, from the point of diagnosis through the remainder of life, gather with friends, families, and supporters. In fact, all raise awareness. They spread information, provide services, and honor other survivors. They also show that life after a cancer diagnosis can be full and meaningful. Wear the cancer color that has meaning to you or a loved one. Other colors that many wear are purple or lavender. We offer enamel awareness ribbon pins, fabric ribbons, and silicone wristband bracelets. In addition, they are available in a variety of colors to meet all your needs.
A Celebration of Survivors
This annual celebration of life is recognized in hundreds of communities worldwide for cancer survivors. It is an inspiration for those recently diagnosed and as a gathering of support. Moreover, it shows support for families, caregivers, friends and health care professionals. For millions of people living with cancer, NCSD is a treasured Celebration of Life. During the events held nationwide, participants pause to honor those who are living with histories of cancer. They are also recognized for their strength and courage. In addition, events acknowledge the contributions of their families, friends, and healthcare providers, as well as those engaged in cancer research.
Anyone living with a history of cancer, from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life, is a cancer survivor, as defined by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation.
History of NCSD
The first celebration of NCSD was held on June 5, 1988. The style of commemoration has always been that of an open network, with local municipalities, hospitals, and other groups all staging festivities. This includes parades and rallies. According to the NCSD website, anyone can register an event and gain the support of the larger, overarching organization. The organization offers a range of resources, including a roster of speakers which include medical professionals, major and minor celebrities, authors, and more. These individuals are available to help host events in their respective towns and cities.
The Importance of National Cancer Survivors Day
While National Cancer Survivors Day recognizes cancer survivors, the day is for everyone. The day draws awareness to the daily challenge’s patients experience before, during, and after treatment. In addition, the day is used to promote resources, research, and other ways to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors.
In the United States alone, there are approximately 16.9 million cancer survivors, about five percent of the population. According to the National Cancer Institute, by 2030, it is expected there will be 22.2 million cancer survivors in the country.
Celebrating cancer survivors yearly raises awareness to not only the challenges, but the milestones made with their friends, family, and medical providers.
The Main Goals of National Cancer Survivors Day are to:
- Honor the strength and courage of all cancer survivors.
- Inspire those who were recently diagnosed with cancer.
- Recognize the family members and friends who provide support to cancer survivors.
- Raise public awareness of the challenges of cancer survivorship.
- Dedicate resources, promote research, and endorse survivor-friendly legislation designed to better the lives of cancer survivors.
Scheduled on the first Sunday in June of each year, NCSD is a true celebration of life. Whether you are a survivor, family member, friend, medical professional or researcher, you are encouraged to participate in this special event. To help promote National Cancer Survivors Day, the NCSDF assists hundreds of hospitals, support groups and other cancer-related organizations that host events by providing free guidance, education, and networking opportunities.
