International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked on June 26 every year. The goal is to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse. In addition, to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy. It is also to provide evidence-based, voluntary services for all. And to offer alternatives to punishment, prioritizing prevention, and leading with compassion. Additionally, the campaign aims to combat stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs. For example, this is done by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental. Wear a red enamel awareness ribbon pin, red fabric ribbon, or red silicone awareness wristband bracelet to call attention to this important day.

The world drug problem is a complex issue that affects millions of people worldwide. Many people who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which can further harm their physical and mental health. And it can prevent them from accessing the help they need. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recognizes the importance of taking a people-centered approach to drug policies. They also focus on human rights, compassion, and evidence-based practices. It marks the awareness of illicit drugs and the major problem they bring to society.

Local and Global Participation

During this day, various local and global communities gather, which not only boosts their morale by reinforcing the past achievements against illicit drug trafficking but also promotes the direct and indirect negative impact of illicit drug usage.

Drug users are hurt in two ways:

  • The bad effects which the drugs inflict.
  • The shame and discrimination they must deal with.

Although there are crores of people who suffer from drug-use disorders all over the world, less than one-fifth of them attend any kind of drug rehabilitation or treatment. This indicates the much-needed event necessary to make people understand the ill effects of drug abuse.

Significance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

World Drug Day is a day to share evidence-based data, research findings, and life-saving facts and to praise the solidarity of the people. On this day, The United Nations urges everyone to take active participation and a strong stance against unreliable sources and misinformation. The focus is on sharing scientific information on drugs in order to save lives.

History of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Every year the 26th of June is observed as World Drug Day after the United Nations 93rd plenary meeting held on December 7, 1987, by recalling its resolution 40/122 done on December 13, 1985. This day honors Lin Zexu’s eradication of the opium trade in Guangdong, China.

On June 26, 1989, the United Nations observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was inspired by Lin Zexu’s efforts to combat the drug abuse trap. International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is also called World Drug Day. On this day, governments and organizations simultaneously honor programs and a list of multidisciplinary recommendations containing practical steps that can help fight drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking.
