National Assisted Living Week

Every year, National Assisted Living Week (NALW) brings recognition to thousands of assistant living residents and staff across the nation. It takes place during the second week in September. Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995, NALW celebrates the unique contributions of assisted living communities. National Assisted Living Week begins the second Sunday of each September. One of the colors associated with this awareness week is orange. Wear an orange enamel awareness ribbon pin, fabric ribbon, or orange silicone awareness bracelet to highlight National Assisted Living Week. All awareness products are available in either a non-personalized or personalized version.

Now more than ever we recognize the effort and sacrifices of each of our caregivers. Caregivers keep residents safe, healthy, and happy. These heroes have stepped up in times of need. For example, during this pandemic they continued to provide top notch care to residents that needed it most. Each caregiver and staff member of assisted living facilities play a significant roll in keeping communities running smoothly. Although NALW may be a single week of celebration and a spotlight on these caregivers, many celebrate them daily for the work they do.

The Origins of National Assisted Living Week

  • Historical Background
National Assisted Living Week was founded by NCAL in 1995. The vision was to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors. And, in addition, caring for individuals with disabilities. This week-long celebration has grown to become a vital event in the lives of those connected with assisted living.
  • Purpose and Goals
The creation of NALW was fueled by a desire to showcase the vibrant lives of residents and the compassionate care provided by staff. It serves to educate the public about assisted living. It also fosters community engagement. And, in addition, highlights the individuality and dignity of every resident.
  • Growth and Evolution
Since its inception, NALW has evolved into a nationwide observance with diverse themes and activities each year. It not only emphasizes the importance of assisted living, It also connects communities, families, and local organizations in a shared celebration.

About National Assisted Living Week

  • Celebrating Residents and Staff
NALW is about honoring those who make assisted living communities special. Whether it’s residents who bring warmth and wisdom, or staff members who dedicate their lives to care, NALW is a time to express gratitude and admiration.
  • Themes and Activities
Each year, NALW adopts a theme that encapsulates its core values. Themes have included concepts like “Family is Forever” and “A Spark of Creativity.” These themes guide activities ranging from art projects to musical performances. They also foster creativity and community bonds.
  • Community and Family Involvement
One of the cornerstones of NALW is engaging families and the local community. Open houses, community service projects, and intergenerational programs are often part of the celebrations, enhancing understanding, and collaboration.

Impact and Importance:

  • Enhancing Understanding
National Assisted Living Week plays a crucial role in educating the broader community about what assisted living really is. By opening doors to neighbors, friends, and family, misconceptions can be cleared. This is a vital role of assisted living in supporting seniors and individuals with disabilities.
  • Strengthening Connections
Beyond the festivities and fun, NALW serves as a time to build and strengthen connections. Whether it’s rekindling family relationships or forging new friendships with community members, the week’s activities promote unity, compassion, and mutual understanding.
  • Recognizing Contributions
Perhaps most importantly, NALW is a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible contributions made by both residents and staff. It is a heartfelt acknowledgment of the wisdom, experience, dedication, and love that fill the halls of assisted living communities every day.
