May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. It’s peak season for asthma and allergy sufferers, which makes this a perfect time to educate patients, friends, family, and co-workers about these diseases. Approximately 65 million Americans suffer from allergies or asthma. Often, the public does not understand the seriousness of these diseases and the impact they have on people’s lives. Many do not recognize the connection they have to one another. Wear gray for asthma and teal for allergies during National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. Both color enamel awareness pins, fabric ribbons, and silicone awareness wristband bracelets are available on the Personalized Cause website.
At least 80% of children and 50-60% of adults diagnosed with asthma have allergies that trigger their symptoms. It is critical to identify asthma triggers and develop an asthma maintenance plan. Asthma is a chronic condition. Scheduling consistent follow-up visits with an allergy and asthma specialist allows proper control of your disease and will also help prevent progression. Together, you and your allergy and asthma allergist will work to ensure that asthma does not interfere with your daily life.
While most people know that allergists treat allergic conditions, not everyone is aware allergists are the specialists trained to identify asthma and the underlying triggers. Allergy and asthma specially trained physicians are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art, quality care to patients with allergic diseases and asthma. They raise awareness, provide education, and participate in research to continue developing new therapies that benefit all patients with asthma and allergies.
More than 100 million people in the United States have asthma and/or allergies. Some people may have more than one of these conditions.
These numbers paint a picture of how many people in the U.S. are managing asthma and allergies. But they don’t paint a picture of the overall impact these diseases have on people, their caregivers, and communities.
This month we also recognize Food Allergy Awareness Week. Over 32 million Americans have a potentially life-threatening food allergy. The first step in living with food allergies is an accurate diagnosis. After that, its education, management, and awareness in our communities that help those with food allergies live a safe and full life.
