 National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

National Distracted Driving Awareness Month takes place in April. To begin, distracted driving is any activity that has the potential to divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. In addition, all distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. To raise awareness, Personalized Cause recognizes distracted driving with our Road awareness ribbon. Our Road awareness ribbon pins is available in both a personalized and non-personalized version.

National Distracted Driving Awareness Month calls attention to the best way to end distracted driving, which is to educate all Americans about the danger it poses. If you do not already think distracted driving is a safety problem, please take a moment to learn more. And, please share this information with others.

Together, we can help save lives. Remember the slogan, It Can Wait!

National Distracted Driving Awareness Month Information

Driving is already one of the most dangerous things we do every day. It’s easy to believe that briefly looking at your phone in certain situations is okay. The problem with doing this is that eventually drivers get looser and looser with what they deem as acceptable. Eventually, a driver can cross the line of what is safe.

Various people, governments, and organizations have made efforts to create awareness surrounding the dangers of texting and driving through quotes and sayings. Here are 14 texting and driving quotes to remind you to stay off your phone and keep two hands on the wheel.

National Distracted Driving Month Facts

  • In 2022 there were 3,308 people killed and an estimated additional 289,310 people injured in traffic crashes involving distracted drivers.
  • Five percent of all drivers involved in fatal traffic crashes in 2022 were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. Six percent of drivers 15 to 20 years old, 21 to 24 years old, 25 to 34 years old, and 75+ years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted.
  • In 2022 there were 621 non-occupants (pedestrians, pedalcyclists, and others) killed in distraction-affected traffic crashes.

Encourage drivers to avoid distractions behind the wheel.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.

Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.

Consider these tips for safe driving:

  • If you have to text, pull over to a safe location and park your car. Only then should you read or send the text message.
  • Appoint your passenger as the “designated texter” to respond to calls or messages.
  • Activate your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature. Silence notifications. Or put your phone away in the backseat.
  • Speak up if you see someone texting and driving and ask them to put their phone away.
