National Kidney Month (Cancer)

March 1

National Kidney Month Takes Place in March!

March is National Kidney Month. The National Kidney Foundation sponsors this awareness month. During National Kidney Month, increase awareness of kidney cancer. And, as you raise awareness, promote the need for a cure. In addition, spur advocacy on behalf of those suffering with the emotional, financial and physical burden of kidney cancer. The awareness color that designated kidney cancer is orange. Wear an orange enamel awareness pin, orange fabric ribbon, or orange silicone awareness wristband bracelet to call attention to kidney cancer.

The National Kidney Foundation is the leading organization in the U.S. dedicated to kidney health. The foundation focuses on awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney cancer. For example, they raise awareness for  hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals. And, in addition, for millions of patients and their families. And, lastly, those Americans at risk.

What Causes Kidney Disease?

National Kidney Month is a time to increase awareness about the function of the kidneys and kidney disease. Kidneys filter 200 liters of blood a day. They also help regulate blood pressure and direct red blood cell production. But they are also prone to disease. One in three Americans is at risk for kidney disease due to diabetes. They are also at risk due to high blood pressure or a family history of kidney failure. There are more than 26 million Americans who already have kidney disease. And most do not know it because there are often no symptoms until the disease has progressed.

National Kidney Disease – Know the “Silent Disease”

Did you know kidney disease is often referred to as a “silent disease” or a “silent killer.” This is because there are usually no symptoms during its early stages of disease. In fact, as many as 90% of Americans who have chronic kidney disease (CKD) don’t know they have the disease until it is very advanced.

The good news is the earlier you find out you have kidney disease, the sooner you can take steps to protect your kidneys from further damage. Protecting your kidneys may allow you to continue to work. It may also allow you to spend time with family and friends, stay physically active, and do other things you enjoy. The awareness color that represents kidney disease is green. Wear a green enamel awareness pin, green fabric ribbon, or green silicone wristband bracelet for kidney disease awareness.

Take Steps to Protect Your Kidneys and Have More Healthy Moments

Know Your Risk

Even if you feel healthy, if you are over 60 or have risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, consider talking with your doctor about getting tested for kidney disease. Your doctor can use your test results to work with you to develop a kidney care plan. Having a plan may reduce your risk for serious health problems, like heart attack and stroke. This will give you more healthy moments.

Schedule Your Test

Your doctor will use two quick tests to check for kidney disease. These include a urine test to check for damage and a blood test to check how well your kidneys are removing wastes from your blood. If your kidneys show signs of damage, your doctor may refer you to a kidney specialist. A kidney specialist is called a nephrologist. A nephrologist may recommend annual or more frequent testing.

Follow Your Kidney Health During National Kidney Month

Your doctor can work with you to create a treatment or monitoring plan that fits your lifestyle, mobility, health status, and dietary needs. Your plan may include managing your existing risk factors for kidney disease, collaborating with a registered dietician to create a meal plan, or getting help to quit smoking. Because chronic kidney disease is progressive, it is very important to continue to follow your kidney health and to update your care plan as needed.
