April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. Why does that matter?
It seems that every major disease has a special month that is dedicated to a cause. As a result, the awareness month is a thirty-day period that encourages people to pay attention. For example, they may walk, fundraise, wear a certain color or attend an event. For the Parkinson’s Disease community, April is Parkinson’s Disease Month.
Further, silver is the color associated with Parkinson’s Awareness Month. We invite you to wear a pin, ribbon or wristband in support of those affected by Parkinson’s. And to raise awareness for this important cause that touches so many lives.
Yet, every single month of the year is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness month. Every day, Parkinson’s researchers work to improve the lives of people impacted by Parkinson’s Disease. And it’s not just in April. These dedicated people help locals in their local communities through support groups and educational programs. And through exercise and movement classes.
These are all programs and services that not only provide insight and information but also create social connections. These connections are so valuable to living with Parkinson’s Disease. For example, groups raise critical funds for research. Whether it’s midnight on a Tuesday in May, or 2 PM on a Sunday in June, they provide education. These include webinars, educational materials, or online support groups.
However, April is still very important! Any effort to raise awareness for Parkinson’s Disease is crucial. We wholeheartedly support and celebrate Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. It’s a chance to take advantage of a special moment when there is extra focus on the disease and an opportunity to educate a broader audience about Parkinson’s Disease.
And, of course, about the support organizations like the American Parkinson’s Disease Association can provide. You’ll see Chapters and Information and Referral Centers ramp up efforts to raise awareness about Parkinson’s Disease in April. And, throughout the year. We hope you’ll help us spread the word. Wear a pin! Get involved. Remember to talk about Parkinson’s Disease in April and throughout the entire year.
