World Lung Cancer Day personalized cause

World Lung Cancer Day

Beginning in 2012, World Lung Cancer Day has been observed every year on August 1. The objective is to raise awareness of lung cancer issues, especially the need for more research and funding. Breakthroughs in research over the past decade have led to better survival rates. However, this is not enough. Lung cancer touches an overwhelming number of lives. In a sense, everyone who cares about a patient with lung cancer has it, too. Everyone in our community has a reason to fight for a cure.

Wear a Pearl Awareness Ribbon, Pin or Wristband to Raise Awareness

Since its inception in 2012, people observe World Lung Cancer Day to raise awareness of lung cancer issues and magnify the need for more lung cancer research funding. World Lung Cancer Day raises awareness of lung cancer risk factors and prevention strategies. In addition, it raises awareness about the importance of early detection. Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent and deadly types of cancer worldwide. Early intervention helps.

Wear a pearl awareness ribbon pin, ribbon or wristband to raise awareness about lung cancer. Wear a pearl and white awareness ribbon pin to raise awareness about secondhand or passive smoke lung cancer.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer:

  • New wheezing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Losing weight
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tired feeling
  • Hoarseness

Why Do We Observe World Lung Cancer Day?

World Lung Cancer Day unites organizations, medical professionals, and communities around the world in the fight against lung cancer. The day serves as a platform to promote awareness, education, and advocacy efforts related to lung cancer prevention, treatment, and support for patients and their families. By highlighting the impact of lung cancer on global health and urging individuals to take action, we can work together to reduce the burden of this devastating disease.

Who is at Risk?

  • Secondhand Smoke: Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke also face an increased risk of developing lung cancer.
  • Environmental Exposure: Prolonged exposure to harmful substances such as radon, asbestos, and other occupational hazards can elevate the risk.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide for both men and women. In 2021, there were an estimated 2.21 million new cases of lung cancer and 1.8 million deaths globally. The 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is relatively low, ranging from 10% to 20%, primarily due to late-stage diagnoses. Smoking alone accounts for nearly 90% of lung cancer deaths.

How long can you live after diagnosis?

After diagnosis, most lung cancer patients live 7-16 months. However, lung cancer life expectancy depends on many factors. This includes your health, sex, cancer type, cancer stage, and spread of the disease. It may be possible to live for decades with lung cancer after a diagnosis depending on the specifics of your case.

Is lung cancer curable?

Early-stage lung cancer is curable if you get diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. Patients whose lung cancer is considered cured have the best life expectancies. Those diagnosed in the later stages typically can’t be cured and will have shorter average life expectancies.

Is lung cancer always fatal?

While lung cancer life expectancies are often poor, this cancer is not always fatal. You can improve your life expectancy by getting diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

What is the mortality rate?

Mortality rate is how many people die from a certain cause. According to the American Cancer Society’s cancer statistics, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. 1 in 4 cancer deaths are caused by lung cancer.

How can I improve my life expectancy?

Get diagnosed and treated as early as possible. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation all play a role in helping patients live longer. Further, an early diagnosis may mean that the cancer hasn’t spread far, which will give you more treatment options.

How to Observe World Lung Cancer Day:

On this important day, there are several ways individuals, communities, and organizations can actively participate in raising awareness and supporting lung cancer prevention:

  • Educational Campaigns: Host and participate in awareness campaigns to share information about lung cancer risk factors, prevention strategies, and early screening.
  • Screening Events: Collaborate with medical facilities to conduct lung cancer screening events, especially for high-risk individuals.
  • Social Media Awareness: Utilize social media platforms to spread facts, personal stories, and messages of hope related to lung cancer.
