World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), celebrated annually on September 10, is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). It is also endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The event represents a global commitment to focus attention on suicide prevention.
World Suicide Prevention Day is a time to remember the lives lost to suicide. It’s also a time to think about the millions of people who have struggled with suicidal ideation. And, to acknowledge the individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted. Further, it is a time to raise awareness about suicide prevention and share messages of hope.
The overall goal of World Suicide Prevention Day is to raise awareness about suicide prevention worldwide. Objectives include promoting stakeholder collaboration and self-empowerment to address self-harm and suicide through preventative action.
These objectives can be achieved through capacity building of healthcare providers. In addition, this includes incorporating relevant actors, positive and informative messaging aimed at the general population and at-risk groups. And facilitating an open discussion on mental health at home, school, in the workplace, etc. Those contemplating or affected by suicide are also encouraged to share their stories and seek professional help.
Wear a teal and purple fabric ribbon or enamel awareness pin to raise awareness about World Suicide Prevention Day. In some other countries, World Suicide Prevention Day is honored with the pin orange and yellow. This enamel pin is available in both a non-personalized and personalized version.
